Kosovo's giant mosh pit

Bangers litter the streets and you just have to watch your step, and indeed your ears.

As the night goes on the music policy changes and hip-hop blasts out from nearby the high golden letters spelling out (in English) “Newborn". The crowd is nowhere near so dense here and people are bursting into spontaneous little dances. Of course while it is all rather light-hearted here, not everyone loves the newborn country. In Mitrovica and Belgrade there has been trouble, although buildings, not people, have so far been the targets.

Happiest day

It seems every second person I talk to says it is the happiest day of their life. I was in Montenegro for their independence celebrations and they were similarly wild but there wasn't the sheer sense of relief and joy.

Teddy Bear Case Exposes Failure of American Feminist Leaders

It took a teddy bear . . .

British schoolteacher Gillian Gibbons, an unimposing woman of 54, was found guilty of "inciting religious hatred" and sentenced to 15 days in jail and deportation by a court in Sudan's Khartoum after allowing her 7-year-old students to name a teddy bear "Muhammad."

In the meantime, Islamist fundamentalists have called for her execution, and her safety is in constant jeopardy. Demonstrations have increased, with crowds carrying machetes, shouting in part: "Execute her! Kill her, kill her by firing squad."

She is under such threat, Sudanese authorities have moved her to a secret location to ensure her safety.

Apparently, naming a cuddly bear Muhammad insults the prophet, while mass-murdering homicide bombers named Muhammad don't.

Iran Dismisses "Fabricated" Nuke Evidence

Khazee insisted Iran's nuclear program is purely peaceful and said his country is working with the IAEA to answer any questions other nations have.

"Iran has been cooperating with the IAEA more seriously and more sincerely and beyond its obligation, so somebody should ask the secretary of state where these questions come from," Khazee said.

Explosive Money Supply Fuels Global Inflation

The problems in the financial sector remain with us," said Bank of England chief Mervyn King on Nov 19th. "A painful adjustment faces the global banking sector over the next few months as losses are revealed and new capital is raised to repair bank balance sheets," he said.

To defuse the crisis, the Fed, the European Central Bank, and the Bank of England are pumping enormous sums of money into the banking system, at below market interest rates, to prevent a "credit crunch" from triggering a global stock market meltdown. "Central banks are working together to forestall any sharp tightening in credit conditions that might lead to a downturn around the world," King declared.

Big banks are reluctant to lend money to each other in the LIBOR market, because of suspicions that borrowers might be holding big undisclosed losses in toxic sub-prime mortgages.

The save the Sonics mailbag

Big Smooth always looking stoned and refusing to jump on his jump shots, but inexplicably making most of them. Detlef imitating Dirk before anyone knew who Dirk was. Mac 10 providing the spark off the bench with gritty D and timely threes. And do not forget about the heart and soul of the team ... Steve 'The Chef' Scheffler, who was an 11 out of 10 on the Bill Simmons Unintentional Comedy Scale. If you were at the Key for any of those playoff games in the mid-'90s, you would understand that Seattle is a basketball town. You think the 12th man at Seahawks games are loud? Try listening to the KeyArena crowd when Karl Malone was at the stripe in Game 7 of the Western Conference finals.

Two ABC Learning directors forced to dumnp shares

CHILDCARE moguls Eddy and Le Neve Groves have been forced to dump $34 million of stock in their ABC Learning Centres business as the company's share price nosedive triggered margin calls on their loans.

ABC shares yesterday fell as much 69 per cent and were placed in a trading halt this morning.

It was revealed today that Mr Groves, who yesterday refused to say how much stock he had been forced to jettison, sold a $14 million parcel of eight million shares at $1.85 apiece.

Mrs Groves's parcel of 11 million shares went at about $1.83 a share, netting just over $20 million.

The couple join two other ABC Learning directors who have been forced to dump millions of dollars worth of shares in the company, prior to the stock being suspended from trade on the ASX this morning.

Fading Fall Foliage Blamed on Global Warming

EAST MONTPELIER, Vt. — Every fall, Marilyn Krom tries to make a trip to Vermont to see its famously beautiful fall foliage.

This year, she noticed something different about the autumn leaves.

"They're duller, not as sparkly, if you know what I mean," Krom, 62, a registered nurse from Eastford, Conn., said during a recent visit. "They're less vivid."

Other "leaf peepers" are noticing, too, and some believe climate change could be the reason.

Forested hillsides usually riotous with reds, oranges and yellows have shown their colors only grudgingly in recent years, with many trees going straight from the dull green of late summer to the rust-brown of late fall with barely a stop at a brighter hue.
