A blog about technology from BBC News

And for years the multi-national companies behind many of the fims, music and TV programmes we enjoy have been looking for a way to shut down the website.

But it's been a game of cat and mouse, made more difficult because The Pirate Bay does not keep its servers in the same country its founders are based in, and because the website itself does not store any copyrighted files - it points in the direction of copied material that are "out there" on the internet.

In effect, The Pirate Bay is a global address book for copied and copyrighted material. It takes advantage of a program called BitTorrent, which makes it easy to share files among large groups of people. Each BitTorrent file comes with an addresss, a tracker, and it's the location of that address that The Pirate Bay publishes on its site.

Guess Which Drug Is Illegal?

It has been deemed highly dangerous, potentially toxic, even lethal, and for years the government and the Centers for Disease Control and your own mother have issued all sorts of lies and alarmist B.S. about it, like how it drains spinal fluid, induces brain aneurisms, makes you vote Libertarian. Which is not to say taking it doesn't have its random dangers, but, you know, please.

This drug is famous for producing incredible feelings of euphoria, openness, warmth and love and happiness in almost everyone who takes it. It is staggeringly effective, non-addictive, and when taken somewhat responsibly and with a slight hint of intelligence, has very few, if any, notable or permanent side effects.

Its positives border on miraculous. It can effortlessly break down long-held psychological barriers, remove obstacles to communication and stifled emotion, make patients/users feel open and happy and much better able to handle stress, anxiety, all manner of trauma.

American Idol Update: Amanda Overmyer Nude Pics, David Archuleta True

I'm going to say that Alexandrea Lushington is out and as cute as she is and as much as I love hearing her Britney Spears imitations every week the adorable Kady Malloy is in trouble.

On the guys side the wig wearing FOB (Friend of Britney) Robbie Carrico is my predicted first exit of the night. The other boy that should be eliminated is Jason Yeager. Jason is the one I am most certain of, all of the others are pure guesses, especially on the girls side as only Brooke White wowed me last night. The full story of the photos scandal is here for Amanda Overmyer. It will be very interesting to se how far her "friend" is willing to go if he or she does have the photos that is claimed in the story that broke earlier today.

Stranger in my own political land

Barack Obama (D-Ill.) in a 1937 Hall room. As an officer of the College Democrats, I am happy about the student enthusiasm for the 2008 presidential election. But as a Hillary supporter, I'm beginning to understand what it must be like to be a Republican on this campus.

Living on the east coast in places like Princeton, N.J., my entire life, I could usually safely assume that everyone around me was a Democrat; now, I see what it's like to be on the other side. This wasn't always the case. Though I couldn't vote in 2004, I remember having conversations about the elections. Heterogeneous groups of Wesley Clark supporters, John Kerry partisans and Howard Deaniacs conversed civilly, listening to each other's perspectives. Civility dominated the conversation between Obama supporters and Hillary supporters until January, when Clinton's inevitability began to falter.

Arkansas Valley Ground Zero For Invasive Tamarisk

Unlike native cottonwood trees, the plants also spread to upland areas. Some stands of trees near John Martin Reservoir are up to 1.5 miles wide. The Tamarisk Coalition estimates water losses in the watershed from tamarisk, above and beyond what native vegetation would use, is 76,600 acre-feet per year, or about the same amount needed by Aurora each year.If the problem is not addressed, future water losses from "infilling" (no expansion from existing infested areas) alone are estimated to be 198,000 acre-feet per year, or enough for Pueblo, Colorado Springs and Aurora combined. The mapping and survey project estimated it would take $70 million to completely eradicate and restore the watershed."This goal is a daunting undertaking in itself for a watershed to accomplish," Van Pelt said. "The solution may lie in developing partnerships to achieve this gargantuan goal."There are several efforts in place to control tamarisk, including the statewide Tamarisk Coalition, which provides education and outreach on the threat.Pending state legislation proposes a Colorado Water Conservation Board grant program to provide $4 million over the next four years to cost share with federal, local and private funds for tamarisk restoration projects.Federal legislation was passed in October 2006 to assist in rectifying the tamarisk problem. In the Arkansas watershed, several groups have formed, including: Bent County Tamarisk Working Partners, Conservation Partners Conquer Tamarisk, Tackling Tamarisk on the Purgatoire, Upper Arkansas Regional Weed Management Cooperative, Bent's Fort Project and local landowner groups. The Southeastern district and Bent County have assembled a collaboration of partners to fund and develop the Arkansas River Watershed Invasive Plants Plan for the watershed.

Obama's Hispanderama

How do you propose to address the high unemployment rates and the declining wages in the African-American community that are related to the flood of immigrant labor?"

Senator Obama, you want to go first on that? And it's for both of you.

OBAMA: Well, let me first of all say that I have worked on the streets of Chicago as an organizer with people who have been laid off from steel plants, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, and, you know, all of them are feeling economically insecure right now, and they have been for many years. Before the latest round of immigrants showed up, you had huge unemployment rates among African-American youth.

And, so, I think to suggest somehow that the problem that we're seeing in inner-city unemployment, for example, is attributable to immigrants, I think, is a case of scapegoating that I do not believe in, I do not subscribe to.

Matthews mischaracterized Bill Clinton "fairy tale" quote

Media Matters for America has noted other instances in which the media have misreported Clinton's "fairy tale" statement.

In addition, Matthews aired a clip of Clinton saying, "Jesse Jackson won South Carolina twice in '84 and '88, and he ran a good campaign, and Senator Obama has run a good campaign here," but did not note that Times reporter Katharine Q. Seelye wrote in a January 28 post on the Times' political blog The Caucus that Jackson himself said that he did not "read anything negative into Clinton's observation." The post also quoted Jackson saying: "Bill has done so much for race relations and inclusion, I would tend not to read a negative scenario into his comments."

From the January 7 campaign event with Bill Clinton, as transcribed by Congressional Quarterly:

QUESTION: Thanks.

Regions' Channing Way branch open for use Monday

Customers of Regions Bank's Channing Way branch will be able to bank at the location Monday even though the branch was heavily damaged in Tuesday's storm.

Thanks to a PBF (portable banking facility) that has been placed in front of the boarded-up building, the Regions branch will begin serving its customers once again Monday morning.
