'Idol' Score: Randy Jackson's Hit
The good news is that once a bid is accepted, Jackson is no longer the debtor. If Fortress accepts a lower bid than $24.5 million, Jackson is not liable for the balance. The debt is cleared. But think what a circus this outdoor auction will be like, and what embarrassment it adds up to. Jackson could easily have avoided this, too. Meanwhile, don't believe spin from the Jackson camp reported on less successful cable operations. We reported a couple of weeks ago that Jackson had paid off a $600,000 bill to the California State Franchise Board having to do with a company called Select Staffing. That had nothing to do with the foreclosure. Jackson owed that money to the state regardless. And there's a big difference between the tax amount and what it would take to save Neverland from auction.
Jeff Thelen's Blog
Do you have any ideas to save money? We ran a couple of stories this week talking about the tough economic times that could lie ahead. And we heard some great advice from experts and the people putting them into action. They say you need to write down a budget and stick with it. Save money and take advantage of your 401k plan as much as possible. Other advice is find hobbies that don't cost as much money (play basketball instead of buying video games) cut down on your number of stops per week at your favorite high end coffee shop and read stuff off the internet instead of subscribing to a magazine. So, do you have any ideas? Feel free to share them. You know what to do. J Respond to Jeff's blog here: Jeff, I saw the clip on "Hunters Coalition Against Earn-A-Buck" and am looking for contact info.
Life jail terms for bomb attack seven
A BANGLADESHI court jailed seven Islamic militants for life for carrying out blasts as part of nationwide bomb attacks that shock the country in 2005. Five of the seven militants from the banned Jamayetul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) were present when the verdict was handed down in a crowded court in Rajshahi city. The other two are on the run and were tried in absentia. "They were found guilty of carrying out five bomb blasts at Chapainawabganj town on August 17, 2005. One of the bombs was exploded at a court and injured three people," police inspector Mahbub Siddiqui said. Authorities said the JMB was behind 400 almost simultaneous blasts in all but one of the country's 64 districts. The attacks were part of a campaign apparently aimed at forcing predominantly-Muslim Bangladesh to replace its secular legal system with traditional Islamic law.
Have the credit card handy
The weather this Sunday was phenomenal. Sixty degree temperatures brought students out to play on the campus mall; there were countless bikers and runners on the (muddy) canal. I was even tempted outside to enjoy the weather and ended up walking around the neighborhood for an hour or so, soaking up the rays of sunshine and thawing out after the freeze of the past few weeks or so. .
Trial looms in transfer of DWP funds
The city of Los Angeles lost a key legal argument Monday and now will have to go to trial to defend the annual transfer of about $30million in Department of Water and Power water-service revenue to the city's general fund. The ruling by a Superior Court judge to deny the city's motion for summary judgment comes as another potential setback for an already cash-strapped city facing a $155 million budget deficit by June 30 and as much as $500 million next year. Because of the uncertainty of the transfers, the city hasn't included them in the current budget, nor in its financial projections. But the DWP case is set to go to trial March 26 and, pending the outcome, the utility has set aside $63.3 million representing two years of surplus water revenue slated for transfer to city coffers.
